2:6

Indeedthose whodisbelieve[d](it) is sameto themwhether you warn themornotyou warn themnotthey believe(6)

As for those who persist in disbelief, it is the same whether you warn them or not—they will never believe.

2:7

Has set a sealAllahontheir heartsand onﱒﱓtheir hearingand ontheir visionﱖﱗ(is) a veilAnd for them(is) a punishmentgreat(7)

Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and their sight is covered. They will suffer a tremendous punishment.

2:8

And ofthe people(are some) whosayWe believedin Allahand in the Day[the] Lastbut notthey(are) believers (at all)(8)

And there are some who say, “We believe in Allah and the Last Day,” yet they are not ˹true˺ believers.

2:9

They seek to deceiveAllahand those whobelieve[d]and notthey deceiveexceptthemselvesand notthey realize (it)(9)

They seek to deceive Allah and the believers, yet they only deceive themselves, but they fail to perceive it.

2:10

Intheir hearts(is) a diseaseso has increased themAllahﱸﱹ(in) diseaseand for them(is) a punishmentpainfulbecausethey used toﱿ[they] lie(10)

There is sickness in their hearts, and Allah ˹only˺ lets their sickness increase. They will suffer a painful punishment for their lies.

2:11

And whenit is saidto them(Do) notspread corruptioninthe earththey sayOnlywe(are) reformers(11)

When they are told, “Do not spread corruption in the land,” they reply, “We are only peace-makers!”1

2:12

Bewareindeed theythemselves(are) the ones who spread corruption[and] butnotthey realize (it)(12)

Indeed, it is they who are the corruptors, but they fail to perceive it.

2:13

And whenit is saidto themBelieveasbelievedthe peoplethey sayShould we believeasbelievedﲠﲡthe foolsBewarecertainly theythemselves(are) the fools[and] butnotthey know(13)

And when they are told, “Believe as others believe,” they reply, “Will we believe as the fools believe?” Indeed, it is they who are fools, but they do not know.

2:14

And whenthey meetthose whobelieve[d]they sayWe believe[d]But whenthey are alonewiththeir evil onesthey sayIndeed, we(are) with youonlywe(are) mockers(14)

When they meet the believers they say, “We believe.” But when alone with their evil associates they say, “We are definitely with you; we were only mocking.”

2:15

Allahmocksat themand prolongs themﲿintheir transgressionthey wander blindly(15)

Allah will throw their mockery back at them, leaving them to continue wandering blindly in their defiance.

2:16

Those(are) the ones whobought[the] astrayingfor [the] guidanceSo notprofitedtheir commerceand notwere theyguided-ones(16)

They are the ones who trade guidance for misguidance. But this trade is profitless, and they are not ˹rightly˺ guided.
