7:144

He saidO MusaIndeed, Ihave chosen youoverthe peoplewith My Messagesand with My wordsSo takewhatI have given youand beamongthe grateful(144)

Allah said, “O Moses! I have ˹already˺ elevated you above all others by My messages and speech.1 So hold firmly to what I have given you and be grateful.”

7:145

And We ordained (laws)for himinthe tablets ofeverythingan instructionand explanationfor everythingSo take themwith firmnessand orderyour people(to) takeﱠﱡ(the) best of itI will show you(the) home(of) the defiantly disobedient(145)

We wrote for him on the Tablets ˹the fundamentals˺ of everything; commandments and explanations of all things. ˹We commanded,˺ “Hold to this firmly and ask your people to take the best of it.1 I will soon show ˹all of˺ you the home of the rebellious.2

7:146

I will turn awayfromMy Signsthose whoare arrogantinthe earthwithout[the] rightand ifthey seeeverysignnot(will) they believein itAnd ifthey see(the) way(of) the righteousnessnot(will) they take it(as) a waybut ifthey seeﱿ(the) way(of) [the] errorthey will take itﲂﲃ(as) a wayThat(is) because theydeniedOur Signsand they wereof themheedless(146)

I will turn away from My signs those who act unjustly with arrogance in the land. And even if they were to see every sign, they still would not believe in them. If they see the Right Path, they will not take it. But if they see a crooked path, they will follow it. This is because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.

7:147

And those whodeniedOur Signsand (the) meeting(of) the Hereafter worthlessﲒﲓ(are) their deedsWillthey be recompensedexcept(for) whatthey used todo(147)

The deeds of those who deny Our signs and the meeting ˹with Allah˺ in the Hereafter will be in vain. Will they be rewarded except for what they have done?”

7:148

And took(the) people(of) Musafromafter himfromtheir ornamentsa calf an image[for] itﲥﲦ(had) a lowing soundDid notthey seethat it(could) notspeak to themand notguide themﲮﲯ(to) a wayThey took it (for worship)and they werewrongdoers(148)

In the absence of Moses, his people made from their ˹golden˺ jewellery an idol of a calf that made a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to the ˹Right˺ Path? Still they took it as a god and were wrongdoers.

7:149

And when(it was made to) fallintotheir handsand they sawthat they(had) indeedgone astraythey saidIfnotﲿhas Mercy on usOur Lordand forgive[for] uswe will surely beamongthe losers(149)

Later, when they were filled with remorse and realized they had gone astray, they cried, “If our Lord does not have mercy on us and forgive us, we will certainly be losers.”
