9:73

ﱁO ProphetﱂO ProphetﱃStrive (against)ﱄthe disbelieversﱅand the hypocritesﱆand be sternﱇﱈwith themﱉAnd their abodeﱊﱋ(is) Hellﱌand wretchedﱍ(is) the destinationﱎ(73)

O Prophet! Struggle against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be firm with them. Hell will be their home. What an evil destination!

9:74

ﱏThey swearﱐby Allahﱑ(that) they said nothingﱒ(that) they said nothingﱓwhile certainlyﱔthey saidﱕ(the) wordﱖ(of) the disbeliefﱗand disbelievedﱘafterﱙtheir (pretense of) Islamﱚand plannedﱛ[of] whatﱜnotﱝﱞthey could attainﱟAnd notﱠthey were resentfulﱡexceptﱢthatﱣAllah had enriched themﱤAllah had enriched themﱥand His MessengerﱦofﱧﱨHis BountyﱩSo ifﱪthey repentﱫit isﱬbetterﱭﱮfor themﱯand ifﱰthey turn awayﱱAllah will punish themﱲAllah will punish themﱳ(with) a punishmentﱴpainfulﱵinﱶthe worldﱷﱸand (in) the HereafterﱹAnd notﱺfor themﱻinﱼthe earthﱽanyﱾprotectorﱿand notﲀa helperﲁ(74)

They swear by Allah that they never said anything ˹blasphemous˺, while they did in fact utter a blasphemy, lost faith after accepting Islam, and plotted what they could not carry out.1 It is only through resentment that they pay Allah and His Messenger back for enriching them out of His bounty! If they repent, it will be better for them. But if they turn away, Allah will torment them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no one on earth to protect or help them.

9:75

ﲂ ﲃAnd among themﲄ(is he) whoﲅmade a covenantﲆ(with) AllahﲇIfﲈHe gives usﲉofﲊHis bountyﲋsurely we will give charityﲌand surely we will beﲍamongﲎthe righteousﲏ(75)

And there are some who had made a vow to Allah: “If He gives us from His bounty, we will surely spend in charity and be of the righteous.”

9:76

ﲐBut whenﲑHe gave themﲒofﲓHis Bountyﲔthey became stingyﲕwith itﲖand turned awayﲗwhile theyﲘ(were) averseﲙ(76)

But when He gave them out of His bounty, they withheld it and turned away indifferently.

9:77

ﲚSo He penalized themﲛ(with) hypocrisyﲜinﲝtheir heartsﲞuntilﲟthe dayﲠwhen they will meet Himﲡbecauseﲢthey brokeﲣ(the covenant with) Allahﲤwhatﲥthey had promised Himﲦand becauseﲧthey used toﲨlieﲩ(77)

So He caused hypocrisy to plague their hearts until the Day they will meet Him, for breaking their promise to Allah and for their lies.

9:78

ﲪDo notﲫthey knowﲬthatﲭAllahﲮknowsﲯtheir secretﲰand their secret conversationﲱand thatﲲAllahﲳ(is) All-Knowerﲴ(of) the unseenﲵ(78)

Do they not know that Allah ˹fully˺ knows their ˹evil˺ thoughts and secret talks, and that Allah is the Knower of all unseen?

9:79

ﲶThose whoﲷcriticizeﲸthe ones who give willinglyﲹofﲺthe believersﲻconcerningﲼthe charitiesﲽand those whoﲾnotﲿfindﳀexceptﳁtheir effortﳂso they ridiculeﳃthemﳄAllah will ridiculeﳅAllah will ridiculeﳆthemﳇand for themﳈ(is) a punishmentﳉpainfulﳊ(79)

˹There are˺ those who slander ˹some of˺ the believers for donating liberally and mock others for giving only the little they can afford. Allah will throw their mockery back at them, and they will suffer a painful punishment.
