20:88

ﱁThen he brought forthﱂfor themﱃa calf'sﱄbodyﱅit hadﱆa lowing soundﱇand they saidﱈThisﱉ(is) your godﱊand the godﱋ(of) Musaﱌbut he forgotﱍ(88)

Then he moulded for them an idol of a calf that made a lowing sound. They said, “This is your god and the god of Moses, but Moses forgot ˹where it was˺!”

20:89

ﱎThen, did notﱏthey seeﱐthat notﱑit (could) returnﱒto themﱓa wordﱔand notﱕpossessﱖfor themﱗany harmﱘand notﱙany benefitﱚ(89)

Did they not see that it did not respond to them, nor could it protect or benefit them?

20:90

ﱛAnd verilyﱜ(had) saidﱝto themﱞHarunﱟbeforeﱠbeforeﱡO my peopleﱢOnlyﱣyou are being testedﱤﱥby itﱦand indeedﱧyour Lordﱨ(is) the Most Graciousﱩso follow meﱪand obeyﱫmy orderﱬ(90)

Aaron had already warned them beforehand, “O my people! You are only being tested by this, for indeed your ˹one true˺ Lord is the Most Compassionate. So follow me and obey my orders.”

20:91

ﱭThey saidﱮNeverﱯwe will ceaseﱰbeing devoted to itﱱbeing devoted to itﱲuntilﱳreturnsﱴto usﱵMusaﱶ(91)

They replied, “We will not cease to worship it until Moses returns to us.”

20:92

ﱷHe saidﱸO HarunﱹWhatﱺprevented youﱻwhenﱼyou saw themﱽgoing astrayﱾ(92)

Moses scolded ˹his brother˺, “O Aaron! What prevented you, when you saw them going astray,

20:93

ﱿThat notﲀﲁyou follow meﲂThen, have you disobeyedﲃmy orderﲄ(93)

from following after me? How could you disobey my orders?”1

20:94

ﲅHe saidﲆO son of my motherﲇ(Do) notﲈseize (me)ﲉby my beardﲊand notﲋﲌby my headﲍIndeed, Iﲎ[I] fearedﲏthatﲐyou would sayﲑYou caused divisionﲒbetweenﲓ(the) Children of Israelﲔ(the) Children of Israelﲕand notﲖyou respectﲗmy wordﲘ(94)

Aaron pleaded, “O son of my mother! Do not seize me by my beard or ˹the hair of˺ my head. I really feared that you would say, ‘You have caused division among the Children of Israel, and did not observe my word.’”

20:95

ﲙHe saidﲚThen whatﲛ(is) your caseﲜO Samiriﲝ(95)

Moses then asked, “What did you think you were doing, O  Sâmiri?”

20:96

ﲞHe saidﲟI perceivedﲠwhatﲡnotﲢthey perceiveﲣin itﲤso I tookﲥa handfulﲦfromﲧ(the) trackﲨ(of) the Messengerﲩthen threw itﲪand thusﲫsuggestedﲬto meﲭmy soulﲮ(96)

He said, “I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful ˹of dust˺ from the hoof-prints of ˹the horse of˺ the messenger-angel ˹Gabriel˺ then cast it ˹on the moulded calf˺. This is what my lower-self tempted me into.”1

20:97

ﲯHe saidﲰThen goﲱAnd indeedﲲfor youﲳinﲴthe lifeﲵthatﲶyou will sayﲷ(Do) notﲸﲹtouchﲺAnd indeedﲻfor youﲼ(is) an appointmentﲽneverﲾﲿyou will fail to (keep) itﳀAnd lookﳁatﳂyour godﳃthat whichﳄyou have remainedﳅto itﳆﳇdevotedﳈSurely we will burn itﳉthenﳊcertainly we will scatter itﳋinﳌthe seaﳍ(in) particlesﳎ(97)

Moses said, “Go away then! And for ˹the rest of your˺ life you will surely be crying, ‘Do not touch ˹me˺!’1 Then you will certainly have a fate2 that you cannot escape. Now look at your god to which you have been devoted: we will burn it up, then scatter it in the sea completely.”

20:98

ﳏOnlyﳐyour Godﳑ(is) Allahﳒthe Oneﳓ(there is) noﳔgodﳕbutﳖﳗHeﳘHe has encompassedﳙallﳚthingsﳛ(in) knowledgeﳜ(98)

˹Then Moses addressed his people,˺ “Your only god is Allah, there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. He encompasses everything in ˹His˺ knowledge.”
