2:216

ﱁIs prescribedﱂupon youﱃ[the] fightingﱄwhile itﱅ(is) hatefulﱆﱇto youﱈBut perhapsﱉ[that]ﱊyou dislikeﱋa thingﱌand itﱍ(is) goodﱎﱏfor youﱐand perhapsﱑ[that]ﱒyou loveﱓa thingﱔand itﱕ(is) badﱖﱗfor youﱘAnd Allahﱙknowsﱚwhile youﱛ(do) notﱜknowﱝ(216)

Fighting has been made obligatory upon you ˹believers˺, though you dislike it. Perhaps you dislike something which is good for you and like something which is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not know.

2:217

ﱞThey ask youﱟaboutﱠthe monthﱡ[the] sacred ﱢ(concerning) fightingﱣﱤin itﱥSayﱦFightingﱧthereinﱨﱩ(is) a great (sin)ﱪbut hindering (people)ﱫfromﱬ(the) wayﱭ(of) Allahﱮand disbeliefﱯin Himﱰand (preventing access to) Al-MasjidﱱAl-Haraamﱲand driving outﱳits peopleﱴfrom itﱵ(is) greater (sin)ﱶnearﱷﱸAllahﱹAnd [the] oppressionﱺ(is) greaterﱻthanﱼﱽ[the] killingﱾAnd notﱿthey will ceaseﲀ(to) fight with youﲁuntilﲂthey turn you awayﲃfromﲄyour religionﲅifﲆﲇthey are ableﲈAnd whoeverﲉturns awayﲊamong youﲋfromﲌhis religionﲍthen diesﲎwhile heﲏ(is) a disbelieverﲐfor thoseﲑbecame worthlessﲒtheir deedsﲓinﲔthe worldﲕﲖand the HereafterﲗAnd thoseﲘ(are) companionsﲙﲚ(of) the Fireﲛtheyﲜin itﲝ(will) abide foreverﲞ(217)

They1 ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about fighting in the sacred months.2 Say, “Fighting during these months is a great sin. But hindering ˹others˺ from the Path of Allah, rejecting Him, and expelling the worshippers from the Sacred Mosque is ˹a˺ greater ˹sin˺ in the sight of Allah. For persecution3 is far worse than killing. And they will not stop fighting you until they turn you away from your faith—if they can. And whoever among you renounces their own faith and dies a disbeliever, their deeds will become void in this life and in the Hereafter. It is they who will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever.”4

2:218

ﲟIndeedﲠthose whoﲡbelievedﲢand those whoﲣemigratedﲤand stroveﲥinﲦ(the) wayﲧ(of) Allah ﲨthoseﲩthey hopeﲪ(for) Mercyﲫﲬ(of) AllahﲭAnd Allahﲮ(is) Oft-ForgivingﲯMost Mercifulﲰ(218)

Surely those who have believed, emigrated, and struggled in the Way of Allah—they can hope for Allah’s mercy. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

2:219

ﲱ ﲲThey ask youﲳaboutﲴ[the] intoxicantsﲵﲶand [the] games of chanceﲷSayﲸIn both of themﲹ(is) a sinﲺgreatﲻand (some) benefitsﲼfor [the] peopleﲽBut sin of both of themﲾ(is) greaterﲿthanﳀﳁ(the) benefit of (the) twoﳂAnd they ask youﳃwhatﳄﳅthey (should) spendﳆSayﳇﳈThe surplusﳉThusﳊmakes clearﳋAllahﳌto youﳍ[the] Versesﳎso that you mayﳏponderﳐ(219)

They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about intoxicants and gambling. Say, “There is great evil in both, as well as some benefit for people—but the evil outweighs the benefit.”1 They ˹also˺ ask you ˹O Prophet˺ what they should donate. Say, “Whatever you can spare.” This is how Allah makes His revelations clear to you ˹believers˺, so perhaps you may reflect
