24. An-NurThe Light

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

24:1

A Surah We (have) sent it downand We (have) made it obligatoryand We (have) revealedthereinVersesclearso that you maytake heed(1)

˹This is˺ a sûrah which We have revealed and made ˹its rulings˺ obligatory, and revealed in it clear commandments so that you may be mindful.

24:2

The fornicatressand the fornicator[then] flogeachoneof them(with) hundredﱒﱓlash(es)And (let) notwithhold youpity for thempity for themconcerning(the) religion of Allah(the) religion of Allahifyoubelievein Allahand the Dayﱠﱡthe LastAnd let witnesstheir punishmenta groupofthe believers(2)

As for female and male fornicators, give each of them one hundred lashes,1 and do not let pity for them make you lenient in ˹enforcing˺ the law of Allah, if you ˹truly˺ believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a number of believers witness their punishment.

24:3

The fornicator(will) notmarryexcepta fornicatressora polytheist womanand the fornicatress (will) notmarry herexcepta fornicatororﱵﱶa polytheist manAnd is forbiddenthattothe believers(3)

A male fornicator would only marry a female fornicator or idolatress. And a female fornicator would only be married to a fornicator or idolater. This is ˹all˺ forbidden to the believers.1

24:4

And those whoaccusethe chaste womenﱿthennotthey bringfourwitnessesthen flog them(with) eightylashe(s)and (do) notaccepttheirtestimonyﲋﲌeverAnd thosethey(are) the defiantly disobedient(4)

Those who accuse chaste women ˹of adultery˺ and fail to produce four witnesses, give them eighty lashes ˹each˺. And do not ever accept any testimony from them—for they are indeed the rebellious—

24:5

Exceptthose whorepentafterafterthatand reformThen indeedAllah(is) Oft-ForgivingMost Merciful(5)

except those who repent afterwards and mend their ways, then surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

24:6

And those whoaccusetheir spousesand nothavefor themwitnessesexceptthemselvesthen (the) testimony(of) one of them(is) fourtestimoniesby Allahthat he(is) surely ofthe truthful(6)

And those who accuse their wives ˹of adultery˺ but have no witness except themselves, the accuser must testify,1 swearing four times by Allah that he is telling the truth,

24:7

And the fifththat(the) curse of Allah(the) curse of Allah(be) upon himifhe isofthe liars(7)

and a fifth oath that Allah may condemn him if he is lying.

24:8

But it would preventfrom herthe punishmentthatshe bears witnessfourﲿtestimoniesby Allahthat he(is) surely ofthe liars(8)

For her to be spared the punishment, she must swear four times by Allah that he is telling a lie,

24:9

And the fifththatthe wrath of Allahthe wrath of Allah(be) upon herifhe isofthe truthful(9)

and a fifth oath that Allah may be displeased with her if he is telling the truth.1

24:10

And if not(for) the Grace of Allah(for) the Grace of Allahupon youand His Mercy and thatAllah(is) Oft-Returning (to Mercy)All-Wise(10)

˹You would have suffered,˺ had it not been for Allah’s grace and mercy upon you, and had Allah not been Accepting of Repentance, All-Wise.
