28:44

ﱁAnd notﱂyou wereﱃon (the) sideﱄwesternﱅwhenﱆWe decreedﱇtoﱈMusaﱉthe Commandmentﱊand notﱋyou wereﱌamongﱍthe witnessesﱎ(44)

You were not there ˹O Prophet˺ on the western side of the mountain when We entrusted the Commandments to Moses, nor were you present ˹in his time˺.1

28:45

ﱏBut Weﱐ[We] producedﱑgenerationsﱒand prolongedﱓfor themﱔﱕthe lifeﱖAnd notﱗyou wereﱘa dwellerﱙamongﱚ(the) peopleﱛ(of) Madyanﱜrecitingﱝto themﱞOur Versesﱟbut Weﱠ[We] wereﱡthe Sendersﱢ(45)

But We ˹later˺ raised ˹several˺ generations, and the ages took their toll on them.1 Nor were you living among the people of Midian, rehearsing Our revelations with them. But it is We Who have sent ˹this revelation to you˺.

28:46

ﱣAnd notﱤyou wereﱥat (the) sideﱦ(of) the TurﱧwhenﱨWe calledﱩButﱪ(as) a mercyﱫfromﱬyour Lordﱭso that you warnﱮa peopleﱯnotﱰ(had) come to themﱱanyﱲwarnerﱳbefore youﱴbefore youﱵso that they mayﱶrememberﱷ(46)

And you were not at the side of Mount Ṭûr when We called out ˹to Moses˺. But ˹you have been sent˺ as a mercy from your Lord to warn a people to whom no warner has come before you, so perhaps they may be mindful.

28:47

ﱸAnd if notﱹ[that]ﱺstruck themﱻa disasterﱼfor whatﱽhad sent forthﱾtheir handsﱿand they would sayﲀOur LordﲁWhy notﲂYou sentﲃto usﲄa Messengerﲅso we (could have) followedﲆYour Versesﲇand we (would) have beenﲈofﲉthe believersﲊ(47)

Also so they would not say, if struck by an affliction for what their hands have done: “Our Lord! If only You had sent us a messenger, we would have followed Your revelations and become believers.”

28:48

ﲋBut whenﲌcame to themﲍthe truthﲎfrom Usﲏfrom Usﲐthey saidﲑWhy notﲒhe was givenﲓ(the) likeﲔ(of) whatﲕwas givenﲖﲗ(to) MusaﲘDid notﲙthey disbelieveﲚin whatﲛwas givenﲜ(to) MusaﲝbeforeﲞﲟbeforeﲠThey saidﲡTwo magic (works)ﲢsupporting each otherﲣAnd they saidﲤIndeed, weﲥin allﲦ(are) disbelieversﲧ(48)

But when the truth came to them from Us, they said, “If only he was given the like of what Moses had been given.”1 Did they not deny what had been given to Moses earlier? They claimed, “Both ˹Scriptures˺ are works of magic, supporting each other!”2 Adding, “We truly deny both.”

28:49

ﲨSayﲩThen bringﲪa Bookﲫfrom Allahﲬfrom Allahﲭfrom Allahﲮwhichﲯ(is) a better guideﲰthan both of themﲱthat I may follow itﲲifﲳyou areﲴtruthfulﲵ(49)

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Bring then a scripture from Allah which is a better guide than these two so I may follow it, if your claim is true.”

28:50

ﲶBut ifﲷnotﲸthey respondﲹto youﲺthen knowﲻthat onlyﲼthey followﲽﲾtheir desiresﲿAnd whoﳀ(is) more astrayﳁthan (one) whoﳂfollowsﳃhis own desireﳄwithoutﳅguidanceﳆfromﳇﳈAllahﳉIndeedﳊAllahﳋ(does) notﳌguideﳍthe people ﳎthe wrongdoersﳏ(50)

So if they fail to respond to you, then know that they only follow their desires. And who could be more astray than those who follow their desires with no guidance from Allah? Surely Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
