40:41

ﱁ ﱂAnd O my peopleﱃWhat (is)ﱄfor meﱅ(that) I call youﱆtoﱇthe salvationﱈwhile you call meﱉtoﱊthe Fireﱋ(41)

O  my people! How is it that I invite you to salvation, while you invite me to the Fire!

40:42

ﱌYou call meﱍthat I disbelieveﱎin Allahﱏand (to) associateﱐwith Himﱑwhatﱒnotﱓfor meﱔof itﱕany knowledgeﱖand Iﱗcall youﱘtoﱙthe All-Mightyﱚthe Oft-Forgivingﱛ(42)

You invite me to disbelieve in Allah and associate with Him what I have no knowledge of, while I invite you to the Almighty, Most Forgiving.

40:43

ﱜNoﱝdoubtﱞthat whatﱟyou call meﱠto itﱡnotﱢfor itﱣa claimﱤinﱥthe worldﱦand notﱧinﱨthe Hereafterﱩand thatﱪour returnﱫ(is) toﱬAllahﱭand thatﱮthe transgressors ﱯtheyﱰ(will be the) companionsﱱ(of) the Fireﱲ(43)

There is no doubt that whatever ˹idols˺ you invite me to ˹worship˺ are not worthy to be invoked either in this world or the Hereafter.1 ˹Undoubtedly,˺ our return is to Allah, and the transgressors will be the inmates of the Fire.

40:44

ﱳAnd you will rememberﱴwhatﱵI sayﱶﱷto youﱸand I entrustﱹmy affairﱺtoﱻﱼAllahﱽIndeedﱾAllahﱿ(is) All-Seerﲀof (His) slavesﲁ(44)

You will remember what I say to you, and I entrust my affairs to Allah. Surely Allah is All-Seeing of all ˹His˺ servants.”

40:45

ﲂSo Allah protected himﲃSo Allah protected himﲄ(from the) evilsﲅthatﲆﲇthey plottedﲈand envelopedﲉ(the) peopleﲊ(of) Firaunﲋ(the) worstﲌpunishmentﲍ(45)

So Allah protected him from the evil of their schemes. And Pharaoh’s people were overwhelmed by an evil punishment:

40:46

ﲎThe Fireﲏthey are exposedﲐto itﲑmorningﲒﲓand eveningﲔAnd (the) Dayﲕ(will be) establishedﲖthe HourﲗCause to enterﲘ(the) peopleﲙ(of) Firaunﲚ(in the) severestﲛpunishmentﲜ(46)

they are exposed to the Fire ˹in their graves˺ morning and evening. And on the Day the Hour will be established ˹it will be said˺, “Admit Pharaoh’s people into the harshest punishment ˹of Hell˺.”

40:47

ﲝAnd whenﲞthey will disputeﲟinﲠthe Fireﲡthen will sayﲢthe weakﲣto those whoﲤwere arrogantﲥIndeed, weﲦ[we] wereﲧfor youﲨfollowersﲩso canﲪyouﲫavertﲬfrom usﲭa portionﲮofﲯthe Fireﲰ(47)

˹Consider the Day˺ when they will dispute in the Fire, and the lowly ˹followers˺ will appeal to the arrogant ˹leaders˺, “We were your ˹dedicated˺ followers, will you then shield us from a portion of the Fire?”

40:48

ﲱWill sayﲲthose whoﲳ(were) arrogantﲴIndeed, weﲵallﲶ(are) in itﲷIndeedﲸAllahﲹcertainlyﲺhas judgedﲻbetweenﲼ(His) slavesﲽ(48)

The arrogant will say, “We are all in it! ˹For˺ Allah has already passed judgment over ˹His˺ servants.”

40:49

ﲾAnd will sayﲿthoseﳀinﳁthe Fireﳂto (the) keepersﳃ(of) HellﳄCallﳅyour Lordﳆ(to) lightenﳇfor usﳈa dayﳉofﳊthe punishmentﳋ(49)

And those in the Fire will cry out to the keepers of Hell,1 “Pray to your Lord to lighten the torment for us ˹even˺ for one day!”
