88:23

ﱁButﱂwhoeverﱃturns awayﱄand disbelievesﱅ(23)

But whoever turns away, persisting in disbelief,

88:24

ﱆThen will punish himﱇAllahﱈ(with) the punishmentﱉgreatestﱊ(24)

then Allah will inflict upon them the major punishment.1

88:25

ﱋIndeedﱌto Usﱍ(will be) their returnﱎ(25)

Surely to Us is their return,

88:26

ﱏThenﱐindeedﱑupon Usﱒ(is) their accountﱓ(26)

then surely with Us is their reckoning.

89:1

ﱔBy the dawnﱕ(1)

By the dawn,1

89:2

ﱖAnd the nightsﱗtenﱘ(2)

and the ten nights,1

89:3

ﱙAnd the evenﱚand the oddﱛ(3)

and the even and the odd,

89:4

ﱜAnd the nightﱝwhenﱞit passesﱟ(4)

and the night when it passes!

89:5

ﱠIsﱡinﱢthatﱣ(not) an oathﱤfor thoseﱥwho understandﱦ(5)

Is all this ˹not˺ a sufficient oath for those who have sense?

89:6

ﱧDid notﱨyou seeﱩhowﱪdealtﱫyour Lordﱬwith Aadﱭ(6)

Did you not see how your Lord dealt with ’Ȃd—

89:7

ﱮIramﱯpossessors (of)ﱰlofty pillarsﱱ(7)

˹the people˺ of Iram—with ˹their˺ great stature,

89:8

ﱲWhichﱳnotﱴhad been createdﱵlike themﱶinﱷthe citiesﱸ(8)

unmatched in any other land;

89:9

ﱹAnd Thamudﱺwhoﱻcarved outﱼthe rocksﱽin the valleyﱾ(9)

and Thamûd who carved ˹their homes into˺ the rocks in the ˹Stone˺ Valley;

89:10

ﱿAnd Firaunﲀowner ofﲁstakesﲂ(10)

and the Pharaoh of mighty structures?1

89:11

ﲃWhoﲄtransgressedﲅinﲆthe landsﲇ(11)

They all transgressed throughout the land,

89:12

ﲈAnd (made) muchﲉthereinﲊcorruptionﲋ(12)

spreading much corruption there.

89:13

ﲌSo pouredﲍon themﲎyour Lordﲏscourgeﲐ(of) punishmentﲑ(13)

So your Lord unleashed on them a scourge of punishment.1

89:14

ﲒIndeedﲓyour Lordﲔ(is) surely Ever Watchfulﲕ(14)

˹For˺ your Lord is truly vigilant.

89:15

ﲖAnd as forﲗmanﲘwhenﲙdoesﲚtry himﲛhis Lordﲜand is generous to himﲝand favors himﲞhe saysﲟMy Lordﲠhas honored meﲡ(15)

Now, whenever a human being is tested by their Lord through ˹His˺ generosity and blessings, they boast, “My Lord has ˹deservedly˺ honoured me!”

89:16

ﲢButﲣwhenﲤdoesﲥHe try himﲦand restrictsﲧfor himﲨhis provisionﲩthen he saysﲪMy Lordﲫ(has) humiliated meﲬ(16)

But when He tests them by limiting their provision, they protest, “My Lord has ˹undeservedly˺ humiliated me!”

89:17

ﲭﲮNayﲯButﲰnotﲱyou honorﲲthe orphanﲳ(17)

Absolutely not! In fact, you are not ˹even˺ gracious to the orphan,

89:18

ﲴAnd notﲵyou feel the urgeﲶtoﲷfeedﲸthe poorﲹ(18)

nor do you urge one another to feed the poor.

89:19

ﲺAnd you consumeﲻthe inheritanceﲼdevouringﲽaltogetherﲾ(19)

And you devour ˹others’˺ inheritance greedily,1

89:20

ﲿAnd you loveﳀwealthﳁ(with) loveﳂimmenseﳃ(20)

and love wealth fervently.

89:21

ﳄﳅNayﳆWhenﳇis leveledﳈthe earthﳉpoundedﳊ(and) crushedﳋ(21)

Enough! When the earth is entirely crushed over and over,

89:22

ﳌAnd comesﳍyour Lordﳎand the Angelsﳏrankﳐ(upon) rankﳑ(22)

and your Lord comes ˹to judge˺ with angels, rank upon rank,
